So, I get this text out of the blue on my personal cell phone.
Hi John, this is Ruby Brooks. How are you doing today? Are you the author of Tales from the Back of a Bus?
Without thinking, I reply “I am. What can I do for you?”
No immediate response. Meanwhile, my Spider-sense is tingling. So, I think: Who is this Ruby Brooks, and how did she get my number? Away to Google!
I discovered a trail of people, all writers, who received the scammy text. This is the best response. I wish I’d found it before I sent mine.
“Ruby” didn’t respond to my text for nearly two hours–she must have been busy texting others in the meantime. She followed up with:
And she was never heard from again.
So many scams, so little time to fact-check every text, email, and phone call you get. But you have to anymore. Stay safe out there, kiddies.
